If there is one thing about winter that I absolutely do not like it is being cold. Every year around this time, I begin searching for ways to stay warm beyond cranking my thermostat to 73 degrees and getting a second job to pay for it.
I’ve looked into getting an electric blanket, but the mix of electricity and lying unconscious has always seemed wrong to me. I’ve read some of the research of how the magnetic field can cause problems for women, and decided I did not want anything to do with that at this point.
During my search I stumbled upon what was called a spa blanket. These are kind of like those bean pillows and animals that provide moist heat to your injuries and grumpy lady parts. However, instead of one pillow, the blanket is made of several pouches that have been sewn together, kind of like a quilt. I read over a few good reviews and decided to give it a try.
Let me tell you, these are wonderful. They are not quite full blankets at 44” X 18”. However, you wouldn’t want them to be, because they would be too heavy, and you wouldn’t be able to fit them in your microwave.
I use this while sitting on my couch in the evening, and then I heat it up again before going to bed. So far, what I have found is it warms up my bed instantly, and as the heat dies down, I maintain my temperature a lot better over night. When I wake up in the morning, I usually still feel warm, and if I don’t, it’s about a 3-minute trip to the microwave to warm back up.
I have the lavender one, which gives off a fairly strong aroma of lavender and peppermint, which is great for me. If you are looking to stay warm this winter, and don’t want to go electric, a spa blanket may be just what you need to give Jack Frost the old one-two.
As an added bonus, I have heard that you can also freeze these blankets, and they will help you stay cool in the summer. When the birdies start chirping again, I’ll let you know how that goes.
